Residents of a village on the island of Thassos in the northern part of the Aegean Sea had to evacuate, as the large forest fire that broke out last night in a pine forest in the eastern part of the island continues to rage, Kathimerini reported, quoted by BTA.

Early this morning the residents of Kinira received a message via the emergency number 112 to evacuate to the village of Limenaria.

Four helicopters are already extinguishing the fire between Elshitsa and Levski

The fire started in a difficult-to-access area of the mountain shortly after dark, which made it impossible for firefighting planes to take off.

Earlier today, the fire service increased its strength, sending 102 firefighters with 33 vehicles and five more teams on foot to fight the blaze.

Army personnel and volunteers have also been mobilized.

According to some reports, two volunteer firefighters were injured in the leg area when a tree fell and received treatment at a local health center.
