Forest fires have been raging since yesterday in southwestern France, Reuters reported.

The flames destroyed 16 houses, 6,000 hectares of land and forced authorities in the affected areas to evacuate nearly 6,000 people.

France, like other European countries, has been hit by a heat wave and drought, with the weather conditions creating the conditions for the occurrence of forest fires in many places in Europe in the last two months.

"The fire is raging and growing in the direction of the Landes department," authorities in the Gironde department said.

The same statement specifies that 500 firefighters are involved in fighting the fires.

The Gironde department was hit in July by two forest fires that destroyed more than 20,000 hectares of forest and forced the authorities to evacuate nearly 40,000 people, Reuters recalls
