The FBI has raided Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, the former president announced.

"These are dark times for our nation as my beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided and occupied by a large group of FBI agents," he said. Trump in a statement, foreign media write, Telegraph reports.

Trump added that FBI agents were at Mar-a-Lago and said "they even went into my safe."

"Nothing like this has ever happened to a president of the United States before," he added.

"After working and cooperating with the relevant government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was neither necessary nor appropriate."

The former president was not in Florida at the time the search warrant was executed, CNN writes.

The search began early Monday morning (local time) and law enforcement personnel appeared to be focused on the area where Trump's offices and personal quarters are located, according to a person familiar with the matter.

As foreign media have pointed out, the Department of Justice has been investigating the discovery of data boxes containing classified information that were sent to Mar-a-Lago after the end of Mr. Trump's presidency.

But it was not clear whether the FBI search was related to that investigation.

Meanwhile, a separate investigation into efforts by Trump allies to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and the January 6, 2021 riots at the US Capitol has also intensified in Washington.
