This pepper is recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the "hottest" in the world.

It is estimated that there are 50,000 species of chili pepper in the world, which is the result of the domestication of this plant more than 6,000 years ago in Peru and Mexico.

Chillies are divided into five categories – Capsicum annuum, Capsicum chinense, Capsicum frutescens, Capsicum baccatum and Capsicum pubescens.

The hottest pepper in the world is the Carolina Reaper, grown by Ed Currie of the PuckerButt Pepper Company in Fort Mill, South Carolina.

Recognized as the hottest chili pepper in the Guinness Book of World Records, the Carolina Reaper has reached a peak of approximately 2.2 million Scoville Heat Units.

This is the scale used to rank how hot chili peppers are.

In comparison, jalapeno peppers contain about 2,500 to 8,000 SHU and cayenne pepper 30,000 to 50,000 SHU.

Can you safely consume Carolina Reaper?
