The United States has today promised another one billion dollars in new military aid to Ukraine.

The pledge involves more direct U.S. deliveries of missiles, ammunition and other weapons to Ukrainian forces and brings total U.S. security assistance to Ukraine from the Joe Biden administration since the war to $9.1 billion.

In a statement, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said: "Nearly six months after the unprovoked and brutal attack on Ukraine, Russia continues its destruction of Ukrainian towns and villages."

"President Biden has been clear that we will continue to support the Ukrainian people as they defend their country from Russian aggression, for as long as it takes."

"As part of these efforts, pursuant to a delegation of authority from the president, I am today authorizing our largest single recall of US weapons and equipment using this authority."

Blinken also said the package would provide a "significant amount" of additional ammunition, weapons and equipment that the Ukrainians are using.

The Pentagon's announcement of a massive new arms shipment comes as analysts warn that Russia is moving troops and equipment toward southern port cities to stave off a Ukrainian counteroffensive.
