US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken visited South Africa on Sunday.

According to APA, the local SABC radio station reported on this.

The diplomat began his trip by visiting the grave of Hector Peterson, who died in the summer of 1976 during the anti-apartheid demonstration at the age of 12, in Soweto.

"Hector's story resonates in the United States because we have a history of fighting for freedom and equality," the secretary of state said.

Blinken will hold talks with South Africa's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Naledi Pandor today.

He will travel from South Africa to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and from there to Rwanda.

Blinken's African tour ends on August 11.
