Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has denied rumors that the military forces he leads have bombed areas around and at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.

"Today, the invaders created another extremely dangerous situation for everyone in Europe - they fired at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, twice in one day," Zelensky said.

"This is the largest nuclear power plant on our continent.

And every bombing of this facility is an open, brazen crime, an act of terror," he added.

Russia's Defense Ministry has denied allegations made by Ukraine's state nuclear company that Russian forces shelled the site of the nuclear power plant - blaming the Ukrainians instead.

The power plant was taken over by Russian forces in early March, as was the nearby town of Enerhodar.

"This is an argument in favor of applying tough sanctions against the entire Russian nuclear industry - from Rosatom to all associated companies and individuals.

This is simply a matter of safety.

"He who creates nuclear threats to other nations is ultimately unable to use nuclear technologies safely," said the head of the Ukrainian state.
