China is suspending cooperation with the United States in a number of areas, including dialogue between top military commanders and climate talks, in retaliation for US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, Beijing said.

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs also announced that it is suspending cooperation with Washington on the prevention of cross-border crime and drug trafficking and the repatriation of illegal immigrants.

In total, Beijing approved eight different measures, Telegraph reports.

In a statement shortly after Pelosi left Japan, China canceled a planned bilateral meeting on the military-naval security mechanism.

Beijing announced separately that it would impose sanctions on Pelosi and her immediate family for their "vicious" and "provocative" actions.

Because of Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, which China considers its territory, China launched military exercises of an unprecedented scale in the waters and airspace around Taiwan.
