On August 5, the President of the Council of the European Union Charles Michel called the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.

APA reports that Charles Michel expressed his concern about the tension that has arisen in the region these days during a telephone conversation.

He emphasized that the European Union will continue its efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region in accordance with the Brussels peace agenda.

President Ilham Aliyev noted that Armenia once again committed military provocation on the territory of Azerbaijan, where Russian peacekeeping forces were temporarily stationed, and as a result, our serviceman was killed.

Emphasizing that this provocation was prevented by taking necessary measures by our Armed Forces, the head of state said that the entire responsibility for the tension lies on Armenia.

President Ilham Aliyev noted that, contrary to the provisions of the statement dated November 10, 2020, Armenia did not withdraw its troops stationed in the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan from our territories.

Also, saying that illegal Armenian military units continue to exist in our territories, the head of state said that Armenia has not fulfilled its obligations based on the November 10 statement for almost 2 years.

President Ilham Aliyev stressed that the Armed Forces of Armenia and elements of illegal Armenian military units should be removed from our lands.

The head of state emphasized that the route of the new alternative road to the Lachin Corridor has been determined in accordance with the provisions of the tripartite declaration, that the construction of this road by Azerbaijan is nearing completion, and that Russian peacekeeping forces will be deployed on that road after the construction of the road is completed.

During the telephone conversation, issues related to the prospects of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the European Union were discussed.
