Lahore:

A 1200-year-old temple in Pakistan will be renovated after a long court battle.

This temple was occupied by a Christian family, which the court has asked to vacate.

This was informed by the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB), the federal body that oversees the places of worship of minority communities in Pakistan.

The ETPB took back the possession of the Valmiki temple located near Anarkali Bazar in Lahore from the Christian family only last month.

Apart from the Krishna temple in Lahore, the Valmiki temple is the only temple where people can visit and offer prayers.

The Christian family that had occupied the temple claimed to have converted to Hinduism.

He was allowing only Valmiki caste Hindus to worship in the temple for the last two decades.

ETPB spokesperson Amir Hashmi said that the Valmiki temple will be renovated under the 'master plan' in the coming days.

He said, "More than 100 Hindus, some Sikh and Christian leaders reached the Valmiki temple. Hindus performed their religious rituals and consumed langar for the first time."

The Christian family had occupied the temple for more than twenty years.

An ETPB official told Dawn newspaper, the temple land was transferred to the ETPB in the revenue records, but the family filed a civil court case in 2010-2011 claiming to be the owner of the property.

Apart from this, the family also built a temple only for Valmiki Hindus.

This left the trust with no option but to fight the case in court.

After the demolition of the Babri Masjid in India in 1992, an angry mob armed with weapons stormed the Valmiki temple.

The temple was demolished and the building was set on fire.

Neighboring shops also caught fire and it took several days to extinguish the fire.

An ETPB spokesperson told Dawn newspaper that a one-man commission set up by the Supreme Court of Pakistan had submitted its recommendations to the government.

In which it was said that the temple should be renovated.

The ETPB was unable to start the restoration work of the temple built on 10 marla land worth crores of rupees in the heart of the city due to the litigation.
