The diplomatic storm that caused the visit to Taiwan of the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States of America continues.

Russia views Nancy Pelosi's visit as a clear provocation, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua also condemned the visit, reports Nova TV.

The US ambassador was summoned to China's foreign ministry, with Beijing stressing that there would be "extremely serious consequences".

China has already announced military exercises in the waters around Taiwan from August 4 to 7.

The White House wants to avoid tensions escalating into direct conflict.

China condemned Pelosi's visit to Taiwan and said it would defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity

"China has threatened to take further steps and we expect that they will continue to respond in the longer term."

We will not engage in saber rattling.

We will continue to operate in the seas, in the skies of the western Pacific, as we have done for decades.

We will continue to support Taiwan, defend a free and open Indo-Pacific region, and strive to maintain communication with Beijing.

We will continue to do what we are doing, which is to support peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait," said White House National Security Spokesman John Kirby.
