According to the authors of the list, the life and activities of these people "by and large, have nothing to do with Ukraine, its history, science, and culture."
The Ministry of Culture recommended replacing all such toponyms in order to minimize the influence of Soviet-Russian narratives on the worldview of Ukrainians and to "restore historical and national Ukrainian toponymy."
As part of decommunization, which began in Ukraine in 2015, 52,000 streets and 987 settlements were renamed after party and state leaders of the USSR.
In addition, all known monuments to Vladimir Lenin were dismantled.
