PM Modi has congratulated Jeremy Lalrinnunga on winning gold.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga for winning the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

He said that Jeremy has made the country proud at a very young age.

19-year-old Jeremy won the second gold medal for India at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games with two new sports records. 

Modi tweeted, "Our youth power is creating history! Congratulations to Jeremy who won a gold medal in his very first Commonwealth Games and created a stellar record in the Commonwealth Games."

"At such a young age, he has made the country proud. Wishing him all the best for future competitions," he said.

Youth Olympics 2018 champion Jeremy dominated the men's 67kg category with two new records lifting a total of 300kg (140kg and 160kg).

He beat Samoa's Waipawa Niewo Ion 293kg (127kg and 166kg) and Nigeria's Ididiong Joseph Umoafia 290kg (130kg and 160kg) who bagged silver and bronze medals respectively.

19-year-old Jeremy of Aizawl holds the snatch (140 kg) and total weight (300 kg) records for the Games.

On Saturday, Mirabai Chanu successfully defended her title winning the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games as expected with a gold medal in the 49kg category.
