About 100 French MPs have criticized Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's belligerent policy towards the Kurds in northern Syria.

They made the criticism in an article published in the French edition "Journal du Dimanche", reported France Press.

"While Vladimir Putin's Russia is multiplying war crimes in Ukraine, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in the shadow of global unrest, is considering launching another bloody offensive against the Kurds in northern Syria," the MPs said.

Turkey's president is taking advantage of the central role he plays for NATO in the conflict in Ukraine to get carte blanche from the Atlantic alliance to step up attacks in northern Syria, parliamentarians say.

The letter was signed by deputies from the Communist Party, the radical left, socialists, ecologists, but also several representatives of the party of President Emmanuel Macron and from the right.

Western countries should not look away from this, the MPs write, and call on EU countries to guarantee the protection of Kurdish activists and associations present on European territory.

MEPs are also calling on France to refer the UN Security Council to declare a no-fly zone in northern Syria and place the Syrian Kurds under international protection.

They also want the autonomous administration in northern and eastern Syria to be internationally recognised.
