The reclamation of the old landfill in Dupnitsa has begun.

The project activities started today with the first sod in the "Zlevo" area.

The total value of the project is BGN 5,059,839.72 including VAT - one hundred percent grant-in-aid.

The reclamation of the old landfill will be carried out according to a project of the municipality of Dupnitsa, financed by the Operational Program "Environment".

The main activity for the implementation of the project includes the technical reclamation of the landfill for domestic waste on the territory of the municipality of Dupnitsa, which will reduce environmental pollution and prevent the risk to the health of the population.

The main objectives of the project for the reclamation of a municipal landfill for non-hazardous waste include improving the ecological characteristics of the area, preventing negative impacts on the components of the environment and the resulting risks to the health of the population, the municipality announced.

BGN 10,000 fine for the mayor of Dupnitsa because of an illegal dump

The accumulation of methane in the layers of waste led to self-ignition at the landfill, Dupnitsa citizens recalled.

The terrain is about 80 decares, and its elevation is about 70 meters.

Calculations show that the volume of waste is of the order of 465 thousand cubic meters. The landfill was formed over decades.

The start of the project is an event of extreme importance for the entire municipality, but especially for Dupnitsa, Bistrica and Jerman, which were gassed during the self-immolations, Mayor Metodi Chimev said at the opening today.

The contractor must complete the task by the end of January 2023.

After the reclamation, a wall will be built in the lower part of the field, and the gases released during the rotting of the waste accumulated over years will be captured, explained the municipality.

Due to a court appeal of the selected contractor, the conclusion of the reclamation contract was delayed.

It became a fact in July this year.

The contractor is a consortium of three companies.

The landfill was closed at the end of 2019.

From January 1, 2020, it is used as a transshipment site, and the waste is transported to the site in "Filipovtsi".
