Lavrov is in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, wrapping up his four-nation tour of Africa, undertaken at a time when Moscow is at odds with Western nations over Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Most African countries refuse to take sides when it comes to the conflict in Ukraine and seek to preserve their economic relations and historical ties with both Russia and the West.

Sergey Lavrov clashed with his Ethiopian counterpart

The Ethiopian government is under pressure from the United States and the European Union for its behavior in the context of the conflict in the state of Tigray, which began in November 2020 and in which thousands of people died and millions were displaced, BTA recalls.

We reaffirm our firm support for the government's efforts to stabilize the situation in the region, as well as for attempts to start a broad national dialogue to resolve the key issues, Lavrov said at a joint briefing with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonen.

The Russian minister said that African countries are trying to independently determine their future and solve their problems as part of the trend towards a multipolar world.

He criticized the West for opposing this aspiration.

Putin: It is inevitable, a new stage in world history is approaching

Demeke thanked Russia for its "unwavering support and assistance in preserving Ethiopia's sovereignty".
