The Authority for Information on the Documents of the former State Security in Albania said that the former president Ilir Meta was an associate of the State Security during the communist era.

Meta rejected these accusations saying that they are politically motivated.

According to the document of this institution, which it submitted to the Parliament of Albania, the approval of some legal changes is required, which then give the possibility of reverification of the figures that have been equipped with the "certificate of purity".

The document states that Meta's name appeared in the files of the State Security.

"...Ilir Meta, equipped with a certificate of image purity from the Mezini and Bezhani Commission, confirmed by us with a decision dated 28.04.2017, it turns out that he actually appears in the documents created by the structures of the former State Security" , it is stated in the document submitted to the Parliament of Albania.

Also, the authority writes that, "in order that such situations do not repeat themselves and in pursuit of the goal of enabling the persons who exercise state duties even more those subjects who exercise high duties, some changes should be made in the Electoral Code" .

Former president Meta rejected the accusations that he was part of the State Security.

"It is regrettable for the behavior of the Authority in the manipulation of files", said Meta.

"With an anonymous e-mail, that when it is revealed, you will all be mocked, it was revealed to us that after 30 or so years, I am this man who, since March of 1992, has become a deputy and has been subjected to all the filters of of all commissions of all times", he added.

This news was announced two days after Meta completed his 5-year term as president and returned to the party he founded himself, the Socialist Integration Movement, which was renamed the Freedom Party upon his return.

He, together with former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, who has been declared a person unwanted by the USA and Great Britain, have said that they have returned to political life with the idea of being the opposition of Prime Minister Edi Rama./REL
