Two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel posted in the Congo under the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission were killed during violent protests on Tuesday.

A spokesman of the Border Security Force has given this information.

Jaishankar said that he is deeply saddened at the loss of two brave Indian peacekeepers.

He said the perpetrators of the "outrageous attacks" should be held accountable and brought to justice.

The minister expressed condolences to the bereaved families.

Both soldiers were part of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Congo.

At least five people were killed and about 50 others injured on the second day of protests against the UN mission in the eastern city of Goma, according to international media.

A Border Security Force spokesman said, "On July 26, two BSF personnel, who were part of a UN peacekeeping force stationed in Butembo, Congo, succumbed to injuries sustained during a violent armed protest."

Officials said that two platoons of 70-74 BSF personnel were stationed in the area, both the soldiers were part of the MONUSCO - United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in DR Congo.

Congolese Police (PNC) and Congolese Army (FARDC) troops arrived but could not control the crowd of more than 500 people.

The BSF and other security forces fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd but they were successful in breaching the perimeter wall at three different places.
