The police in southern Italy have arrested 12 people in an operation against members of the mafia, reported DPA, quoted by BTA.

Among those detained are businessmen and alleged members of the infamous Calabrian 'Ndrangheta organization, the Italian financial police said.

Eight of them were sent to custody, the rest are under house arrest.

31 properties and the assets of 27 companies with a total value of 32 million euros were confiscated.

One of the companies is located in Slovenia and another in Romania.

The businessmen are believed to have worked closely with members of the mafia in the construction industry and in the food wholesale trade, as well as in other areas.

The operation, named "Planning", followed a two-year investigation involving Calabria's financial police and Italy's Anti-Mafia and Organized Crime Directorate.

The 'Ndrangheta is considered the most powerful mafia group in Italy.

She makes billions from the international drug trade.
