In private talks, representatives of China have issued strong warnings to the Biden administration in connection with a possible visit to Taiwan by the speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, reports Reuters.

The information comes from the Financial Times, which cited six people familiar with China's warnings as saying they were significantly harsher than Beijing's past threats on previous occasions when it was unhappy with the actions or policies of USA vs. Taiwan.

The language used suggests a possible military response, according to sources familiar with the situation.

The White House National Security Council and the State Department declined to comment on the report.

So far, there is no comment from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, BTA notes.

China is increasing its military activity around Taiwan, trying to pressure the island's democratically elected government to accept Beijing's sovereignty.

The government in Taipei says that only the island's 23 million people can decide its future and stresses that it wants peace, but the island is ready to defend itself if attacked.

China issued a direct threat to the US

The Financial Times reported Monday that Pelosi plans to visit Taiwan in August.

China's foreign ministry said the next day that her visit to Taiwan would affect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity and the US would bear the consequences.

On Wednesday, US President Joe Biden said he plans to hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping by the end of the month.

The US president appeared to cast doubt on reports of Pelosi's trip to Taiwan.

I think the military thinks it's not a good idea right now, but I don't know what the status is, Biden told the media.
