At least three people were shot dead and one was wounded when a gunman attacked a university in the Quezon suburb of the Philippine capital, Manila, the Associated Press reported.

The gunman, who was armed with two pistols, was captured after the attack near the central entrance of the Ateneo de Manila University, police said.

The area where the university building is located has been cordoned off, and a graduation ceremony for graduates of the university's law school, which was scheduled for today, has been canceled, law enforcement said.

At the time the shooting began, Philippine Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexander Hesmundo, who was expected to deliver a speech to the graduates, was traveling to the institution of higher education, the Associated Press noted.

Authorities said Rosita Furigay, a former mayor of Lamitan town in the southern province of Basilan, her aide and a university security guard were killed in the attack.

Furigai's daughter, who was scheduled to attend the graduation ceremony, was injured and taken to the hospital.

The motives of the perpetrator are not yet clear, adds BTA.

The attack came at a time when the Manila suburb is under heightened security and a ban on carrying weapons.

President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is expected to deliver his first State of the Nation Address tomorrow at the Quezon-based Parliament.
