The European Commission is expected today to announce an emergency plan to guarantee the supply of natural gas to the countries of the European Union amid fears that they may be stopped by Russia, DPA reported.

The plan, which is still in working form and subject to change, is aimed at preventing a possible winter energy crisis if Russian supplies are cut off, the agency noted.

It states that the EC urges EU countries to continue implementing voluntary measures to reduce natural gas consumption.

If an emergency situation occurs in two or more EU countries due to a decrease in gas supplies, then "mandatory quotas for the use of natural gas will be imposed," says the working version of the plan.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) warned yesterday that the efforts of EU countries to secure supplies of natural gas from alternative sources to Russia are not enough to avoid restrictions on the use of the blue fuel in winter.

The IEA has warned Europe to immediately reduce gas consumption before winter

The international organization has called for a reduction in consumption to ensure the filling of gas storage facilities.
