  The Commerce Ministry said on Tuesday that work from home (WFH) will be allowed in the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) for a maximum period of one year and can be implemented up to 50 percent of the total workforce.

The Commerce Department has notified new rule 43A for work from home in the Special Economic Zone Rules, 2006.

The ministry said that the notification has been issued based on the demand from the industry.

The industry had demanded uniform implementation of WFH policy for all Special Economic Zones.

, certain categories of employees working in SEZ units will be allowed to work from home.

These employees include employees working in information technology and allied areas working in SEZ units.

Those employees will also come under its purview, who are temporarily unable to come to work.

According to the ministry, the facility of work from home can be given to 50 percent of the total employees.

This includes the contract workers in the unit.

The Development Commissioner of the SEZ will be empowered to allow more than 50 percent of the employees to work from home on valid grounds.

The ministry said, "Work from home has now been allowed for a maximum period of one year.

However, the development commissioner can extend it for a period of one year at a time on the request of the units.
