The record heat in Europe reached Germany today.

Temperatures in most of the country reached 40 degrees, BNR reported.

The record is from 2019 - 41 degrees.

Hot phases like this used to happen once every 50 years in pre-industrial times, now they happen once every 10 years, five times more often.

If carbon dioxide pollution continues at current rates, European summers will have at least 60 consecutive very hot days by the end of the century.

A terrible example of the catastrophic consequences of a long record heat are the summers of 2018, 2019 and 2020 - in Germany alone, 20 thousand people died in this period from the consequences of the heat.

The financial damage from the heat is also huge - from 2000 to today, warming costs at least 145 billion euros.

German authorities have drawn up a heat emergency plan, especially in nursing homes and hospitals.

The trade unions insisted on declaring a non-working day in such temperatures.
