German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said today that Berlin's decision to reactivate power plants is temporary and that the authorities remain committed to the fight against climate change.

He regretted the decision to activate 16 power plants and allow the operation of 11 others due to fears of new interruptions in the supply of natural gas from Russia, to compensate for the lack of energy.

"Due to the brutal Russian attack on Ukraine, we had to temporarily use some facilities that were closed, but only for a short period of time", emphasized the 64-year-old.

He insisted that Germany remains committed to ending greenhouse gas emissions by 2045, which is much earlier than other major industrial nations.

Scholz added that Berlin will do everything it can to fight climate change,

But climate activists have blocked major roads in and around Berlin recently in protest against plans for new oil and gas projects in the North Sea.

Otherwise, the Minister of Energy, Robert Habeck, has ruled out the possibility of extending the lifespan of Germany's three remaining nuclear power plants beyond this year, arguing that this would not solve the needs of the German state.
