The second day of the Informal Meeting of Ministers of the Environment in Prague was dedicated to international negotiations in the field of climate and achieving a successful outcome within the upcoming 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention in Egypt in November 2022 on climate change (SOR27), the press center of the Ministry of Education and Culture reported.

Minister Sandov pointed out that the promotion of our country's candidacy is another and logical step for a successful implementation the "green" transformation of the country with a view to achieving the goal of climate neutrality by the middle of the century set in the European legislative act on climate.

The Conference of the Parties is the highest decision-making body under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which convenes annually to assess and plan policies to combat climate change worldwide.

 Taking into account the currently ongoing negotiation processes before COP 27, Minister Sandov pointed out that they provide a definite opportunity to maintain the momentum to achieve commitment at the global level.

Among the concrete ways in which this can be realized, Minister Sandov highlighted the drafting and implementation of the Mitigation Work Program, the definition of more ambitious, measurable and wide-ranging nationally determined contributions, the formulation of long-term strategies and the inclusion of all actors - governmental and non-governmental .

The focus should be placed on the ecological, economic and social transformation of the system, thus encouraging higher ambition.

"I believe it is particularly important to ensure a review of nationally determined contributions, the addition of sectors or gases, and a shift to economy-wide greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.

In this sense, it is necessary to develop the topic of limiting the leakage of methane emissions from all sources and to make maximum efforts to make this a global priority", stressed Minister Sandov.

Within the framework of the Informal Meeting of EU Environment Ministers, the Deputy Prime Minister for Climate Policies also held bilateral meetings with the delegations of Germany, Ukraine, Austria, Greece, Switzerland, Cyprus and Croatia, during which the perspective for the region of The Balkans as a future host of the COP 29 climate conference.

* The Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC is the largest international forum in a political aspect, for which Bulgaria will raise its candidacy.

The procedure for admitting the country's candidacy for the chairmanship of the CIS is predicated on the approval of Bulgaria's candidacy within the framework of the Eastern European Regional Group, which in turn proposes the candidacy for voting by the executive bodies of the Conference of the Parties.
