Emergency services on the French Atlantic coast had to take thousands of residents to a safe place because of the spreading forest fires, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

As a precaution, five campsites near Teste-de-Buche, south of the city of Bordeaux, were evacuated this morning.

About 6,000 people have been relocated, according to information from the Gironde department.

In the area of ​​the small southwestern town of Landiras, where forest fires are also raging, 500 people were evacuated.

More than 1,200 hectares of land have been destroyed amid persistent drought and high temperatures. 

Temperatures of 37C are expected in the region today and a major heatwave warning has been issued.

According to the department, more than 600 firefighters are battling the blaze, with emergency services from other parts of the country also expected to assist.
