Japan's government plans to contact G20 countries that are neutral towards Russia in light of events in Ukraine to encourage them to impose sanctions on it.

This was stated by Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, quoted by RIA Novosti.

"In order to increase the effectiveness of the sanctions (against Russia), Japan intends to continue to develop the necessary measures together with the world community, primarily with the G-7 countries. We want to try to encourage the countries in the form of the G-20, which now are neutral, to apply sanctions against the Russian Federation," he noted.

To date, Japan has introduced several packages of sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, the latest of which was announced on July 5.

Yesterday, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said that the meeting of G20 foreign ministers in Bali showed him the different points of view around the world on the situation in Ukraine and its consequences.

He pointed out that the G7 and like-minded countries are united in condemning and sanctioning Russia and in trying to hold the Kremlin regime accountable.

However, other countries, such as most of the "Global South", often take a different view.
