The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Armenia has demanded from businessman and politician Gagik Sarukyan to stop the work of placing the statue of Jesus on Mount Atis.

APA reports with reference to "Sputnik Armenia" website that the ministry justified this by studying the construction project.

According to the information of the Ministry, there may be remains of a city-fortress belonging to the Bronze and Iron Age on the top of the mountain.

It should be noted that G. Sarukyan announced that he will erect a statue of Jesus in Armenia in January of this year.

He said that the height of the statue will be 33 meters according to the age of Jesus.

On July 9, the businessman announced that the work has been started.

Economy Minister Vaan Kerobyan also took part in the foundation ceremony.

The Ministry of Culture said that "Gaqik Sarukyan" foundation sent a corresponding letter to the ministry in February of this year, but did not submit the construction project.

According to the information of the Ministry, it is also noted that there are about 20 historical and cultural monuments belonging to different periods and included in the state register at the foot of Mount Atis.

"Although we consider the idea monumental and acceptable, we demand the suspension of work until the project is presented and studied," the information emphasizes.
