Political developments are changing rapidly in Sri Lanka, which is facing a terrible economic crisis.

Angry protesters, enraged by the situation, occupied the Rashtrapati Bhavan of the country on Saturday.

The protesters recovered a large amount of Sri Lankan rupees from the Rashtrapati Bhavan, which was later handed over to the police.

President Gotabaya Rajapakshe has told Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that he will resign on July 13, amid growing anger among people towards him.

  • "President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has officially informed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that he will resign as previously announced," a release from the Prime Minister's Office said.

  • Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's office said on Monday that the entire Sri Lankan cabinet would resign and hand over its responsibilities to the new all-party interim government. 

  • On Saturday, President Rajapaksa informed Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeverdane from an undisclosed location that he would resign on Wednesday.  

  • Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's church leaders said on Monday that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will have to accept personal responsibility for leading the country into a state of bankruptcy.

    He along with the President has demanded the immediate resignation of PM Ranil Wickremesinghe. 

  • The Church of Ceylon is issuing a statement that President Rajapaksa no longer has any right to rule the country. 

  • On the other hand, the Indian High Commission has again denied the reports, in which it has been said that Indian troops will be sent to Colombo by New Delhi.

    Similar rumors had surfaced earlier as well and the Indian High Commission at that time also vehemently dismissed the speculation that India would send its troops to Sri Lanka. 

  • Along with this, the High Commission had said that India fully supports the democracy, stability and economic recovery of the island nation. 

  • Amidst this ongoing developments in Sri Lanka, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that India has committed to give US $ 3.8 billion to help Sri Lanka, which is facing economic crisis. India's External Affairs Minister Jaishankar said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi Under the 'neighbourhood first' policy, the government makes special efforts to try and help meet the needs of the country's neighbors.

  • It is worth noting that earlier Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa (76) had also resigned from the post of Prime Minister in similar circumstances.

    Later Ranil Wickremesinghe was appointed PM.  

  • Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis since independence from Britain in 1948.

    There has been a severe shortage of foreign exchange in the country, due to which it is unable to pay for the import of food items and fuel.

    Due to this, thousands of people have been demonstrating on the streets of Sri Lanka since April 9.
