In Albania, there are about 100,000 elderly people who need long-term care in 24 hours.

The data has been compiled by experts in geriatrics, who show that under these conditions, abuse of trust by caregivers is increasingly occurring among the vulnerable elderly.

Albanian society is moving towards the lonely individual, while the declining birth rates show that we are getting older.

The elderly say they feel abandoned and lonely by their children and relatives.

Alban Ylli, an expert on geriatric issues, from the data collected recently as part of a Balkan study, says that the number of elderly people who need long-term care has reached 100,000.

"We are a society that is moving more and more towards isolation, the lonely individual, and we are aging more and more often.

The elderly are increasingly vulnerable, with increasingly pronounced needs for long-term care.

"About 100,000 elderly people need long-term care, of various health and social needs, and some of them need 24 hours," says Ylli.

But can the abandonment of an elderly person by his child when the latter has emigrated for economic reasons be called abuse?

"When an elderly person is abandoned, knowingly neglected for a certain period of time, this is a form of abuse and the elderly person in this case has the right to report.

One's rights are affected in this case and in this case I advise that this be reported by the elderly.

Young people or even the children of the elderly do this without purpose and declare themselves as such, but they know what they are doing" - explains Ylli.

Although there are insufficient facts, Ylli says that forms of abuse of the elderly in conditions of trust by their guardians have even begun to appear in Albania.

"Elderly abuse can happen both in the family and in social care centers.

Abuse by caregivers is one of the forms that is being recognized in Albania as well.

We still don't have enough facts to properly present the phenomenon, but on international platforms, the issue of how to protect vulnerable elderly people from abuse in the conditions of a relationship of trust, which is the most typical and most dangerous abuse, is taking place more and more. it is leaving more wounds in society".

Although lonely, they find each other in flowery parks and try as much as they can to enjoy themselves, reports rtsh.
