At least 15 people were killed and five others wounded Sunday in a Russian attack on an apartment building in the eastern Ukrainian city of Chasiv Yar, the regional governor said.

The death toll could continue to rise after Donetsk regional governor Pavlo Kyrylenko warned that at least 30 more people were trapped under rubble after it was hit by a Russian Uragan missile, the Telegraph reports.

"The rescue operation is underway.

Rescue teams were able to pull out six dead and five wounded," Donetsk regional governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said on Telegram.

Having faced long battles to take cities in the neighboring Lugansk region, particularly Severodonetsk and Lysychansk, Russia is now trying to push deeper into Donetsk to consolidate its control over the entire Donbass region to the east.

They have been hitting targets along the front line without achieving major gains as Ukrainian forces have successfully repulsed their attacks.

According to the governor, 591 civilians have been killed and 1,548 injured so far in the Donetsk region since the Russian aggression began on February 24.
