The €220 million Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB), which will be officially opened on Friday in Komotini in the presence of the Prime Ministers of both countries, Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Kiril Petkov, will be operational by the end of July, the Greek Environment Minister said and energy Kostas Skrekas, reports ANA-MPA.

Skrekas, speaking at a conference in Athens organized by Economist magazine, highlighted Greece's role in strengthening energy security in the region and the European Union through the liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure already in operation, as well as the planned new installations, the Eastern Mediterranean gas pipeline (East Med), the modernization of the interconnection electricity connection with Bulgaria, Albania and Italy and the construction of the interconnection electricity connection with Egypt.

He also noted that the liquefied natural gas terminal in Revitusa already covers up to 80 percent of Bulgaria's daily needs.

The 180-kilometer gas pipeline is being built by a joint venture of the Bulgarian state energy company BEH, the Greek gas company DEPA and the Italian Edison.

Its capacity will be 3 billion cubic meters, which can be increased to 5 billion cubic meters.
