Due to the Ukraine conflict, compulsory military service may be restored in Latvia.

APA reports that this was said by the Minister of Defense of the country, Artiks Pariks.

The minister said that compulsory military service will be restored from 2023.

In parallel with this, a military base will be built in Jekabpils near the Russian border.

It should be noted that compulsory military service was abolished in Latvia with a population of 2 million in 2007.

The armed forces consist of professional soldiers and the National Guard.

The number of people in actual military service is 7,500, and the number of NATO soldiers in the country is 1,500.
