From 2023 to 2028, a transitional period is planned, when young men (18-27 years old) will be able to serve on a voluntary basis.

Then the service will become mandatory, reports delfi.lv.

The introduction of a new service system must be adopted by the Saeima.

According to the plan of the Ministry of Defense, the first voluntary conscription will begin on January 1, 2023, as part of which 500 people are planned to be recruited.

The term of service will be 11 months, including one month of vacation.

It is assumed that the conscripts will be able to spend the weekend at home.

The call will be held twice a year - on January 1 and July 1.

Students will be able to serve after completing their studies at the university.

Women can apply voluntarily.

Pabriks noted that according to the reform proposed by the ministry, a discussion is expected, and the department is open to proposals.

He urged not to associate the reform with compulsory service, noting that Latvia will continue to have a professional army.

Latvia decided to abandon compulsory service in 2006.
