Church candles will double in price from the beginning of the month.

The decision on this rests with the Holy Synod.

One of the reasons for the drastic price increase is the high transport costs of importing paraffin and the higher prices of raw materials.

On the eve of the Resurrection of Christ, the prices of church candles in Plovdiv were increased, with the most popular being sold for 50 cents. The decision of the Holy Synod of June 21 determined a new increase in price by another 20 cents. So now in all churches in the country the cheapest candles they will be 80 cents each.

The increase in prices may lead to greater interest in buying candles from unregulated places, at prices 10-20 cents cheaper, people commented.

Most of the metropolitans and large monasteries in the country confirmed to BNT about the price increase, but refused an official comment.

An inspection showed that the church now pays 160 BGN for a kilogram of paraffin, instead of the previous 80 BGN. The high price of industrial electricity also contributes to the increase in the price of candles.

Calculations show that nearly 35% of the value of one candle remains for the support of the church diocese.
