There was a telephone conversation between the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Policy and Security Affairs, Joseph Borrell, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, Vladimir Norov.

APA reports that Borrell said this on Twitter.

"I discussed the situation in Uzbekistan with Foreign Minister Norov. I regret the loss of life in Nukus. It is important to reduce the tension and investigate the facts. I called on Uzbekistan to continue inclusive constitutional reforms," the EU High Representative noted.

It should be noted that on July 1, an action against the amendment to the Constitution was held in Nukus, the center of the Karakalpak Autonomous Republic.

18 people died and 243 people were injured in the clashes that occurred during the intervention of the power structures.

The organizers of the action were arrested.

In the amendment project, it was proposed to remove the article from the Constitution of the country on the fact that Karakalpak is a sovereign republic within the Republic of Uzbekistan and that the people of Karakalpak can secede from Uzbekistan on the basis of a national referendum.

After the events in Nukus, the Parliament of Uzbekistan adopted a decision supporting the maintenance of the sovereign status of the Karakalpak Autonomous Republic.

From July 3 to August 2, a state of emergency was imposed in the Autonomous Republic of Karakalpak.
