The Delhi Assembly on Monday approved a bill to increase the salaries and allowances of its lowest-paid members by more than 66 percent in the country.

Five separate bills were introduced for increasing the salary of ministers, MLAs, Chief Whip, Speaker-Deputy Speaker and Leader of Opposition in the House, which were approved by the members.

These bills will now be sent to the President for final approval.

Revenue Minister Kailash Gahlot wrote in a tweet on Monday, "Delhi Vidhan Sabha has today approved five bills related to increase in salaries and allowances of Ministers, MLAs, Chief Whip, Speaker-Deputy Speaker and Leader of Opposition in the House, after 11 years of last increment. This bill will come into force after the approval of the President of the country.

During this, the members emphasized that the salary should be commensurate with the rising prices and the work done by the MLAs.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who also holds the finance portfolio, said, "There should be some 'reward' to encourage talented people to join politics. After all, the corporate world gets a pool of talented people because of their salary."

BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Ramvir Singh Bidhuri also supported the pay hike.

At present, a member of the Delhi Legislative Assembly gets Rs 54 thousand as salary and allowances, which will increase to Rs 90 thousand after the approval of the President.

According to official figures, an MLA currently gets 12 thousand rupees per month as salary, then after the approval of the President, it will increase to 30 thousand rupees.

The election allowance will be increased from Rs.18 thousand per month to Rs.25 thousand, while the conveyance allowance (transport/vehicle allowance) will be increased from Rs.6 thousand to Rs.10 thousand.

Telephone allowance will increase by two thousand rupees, it will increase from 8 thousand rupees to 10 thousand rupees while secretariat allowance will increase from 10 thousand rupees to 15 thousand rupees.
