Several people are believed to have been shot in a shopping mall in Denmark.

Terrified shoppers were seen running to safety after a gunman with an 'automatic weapon' opened fire at the Field's shopping center in Copenhagen, according to foreign media reports.

It has not yet been confirmed how many people were shot at the scene, just a few hundred meters from the Royal Arena.

A person - whose identity is not yet known - has been arrested.

Meanwhile, witnesses have described the event saying that they heard multiple gunshots as the "chaos" broke out around 5:00 p.m. this afternoon.

Mothers were seen clutching babies as horrified shoppers fled the horror scenes.

Emilie Jeppesen, 20, told Danish media: "We didn't know what was happening.

Suddenly there was only chaos everywhere."

"We were sitting and waiting to eat and suddenly we saw people running."

"Then we first thought 'why are these people running?'

But then we could hear shots."

While her friend Astrid Kofoed Jørgensen added: "Everyone in the restaurant came out of the kitchen and then there we heard three or four shots."
