The United States announced today that it will provide Ukraine with $820 million in new military aid, including new surface-to-air missile systems and counter-artillery radars in response to the long-range missiles Russia relies heavily on in the war, the Associated Press reported.

In recent days, Russia has fired dozens of missiles into Ukrainian territory and pressured Ukrainian forces with sustained attacks, sometimes lasting hours.

Ukrainian leaders have urged their Western allies to quickly send more munitions and high-tech systems to help Ukrainian forces make up for the disparity in equipment and manpower.

In total, the US has already directed more than $8.8 billion in arms and military training to Ukraine, nearly $7 billion of which was announced after Russia's attack on its neighbor in late February.

As part of the new package, the US will buy two NASAMS systems, a Norwegian-developed medium- and long-range air defense system used to protect the airspace around the White House and the Capitol in Washington.

The Pentagon will also provide the Ukrainian military with up to 150,000 155mm artillery shells, as well as additional ammunition for the HIMARS medium-range missile systems it provided to Ukraine in June.

As of August 2021, this is the 14th shipment of weapons and ammunition that the US Department of Defense has provided to Ukraine from its stockpiles.
