Five people died and 84 were injured in the strong earthquake that shook Iran last night, DPA reported, citing authorities.

The previous figures were for three victims.

The 6-magnitude earthquake, according to the US Geological Survey, struck in the early hours of the day with an epicenter in the Persian Gulf.

It was followed by several aftershocks.

The village of Saye Khosh, in Iran's southern Hormozgan province, was the worst affected.

One person died in a 5.6-magnitude earthquake in southern Iran a week ago, DPA recalls.

A strong earthquake in neighboring Afghanistan last month killed more than 1,000 people.

The region is seismic, as three tectonic plates meet there - the Arabian, the Indian and the Eurasian, notes BTA.
