On the last day of the Alliance's summit in Madrid, Stoltenberg stressed that the danger was extremely serious if the war escalated into an open military conflict between Russia and NATO.

He outlined two tasks for the Alliance to avoid a direct conflict with Russia: "One task for NATO and its allies is to provide assistance to Ukraine - something we endorsed during this meeting. We also have a key responsibility to avoid escalating the conflict. and its exit from the borders of Ukraine ".
