Syria has recognized the independence and sovereignty of the People's Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk (DNR and LNR), the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.

"The Syrian Arab Republic has decided to recognize the independence and sovereignty of the Donetsk People's Republic and the Luhansk People's Republic," the Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement issued by the Syrian state news agency SANA.

In February, after an extraordinary large meeting of the country's Security Council, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the citizens of the Russian Federation and stated that he considered it necessary to take a decision on the immediate recognition of the sovereignty of the LNR and DNR.

Putin justified the decision that violence and lawlessness are being perpetrated against the population of those countries and that there is no solution other than military recognition and intervention.

Shortly after his speech, the president signed decrees in the Kremlin recognizing the Donbass republics.

In his decrees, Putin ordered the Russian Armed Forces to ensure peace in the DNR and LNR.
