The United States has imposed new sanctions on nearly 100 more Russian individuals and businesses and banned the import of newly produced Russian gold, Reuters reported, citing a statement from the US Treasury Department.

With this move, the White House increases the pressure on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine, the agency said, quoted by BTA.

The US Treasury Department has said it has imposed sanctions on another 70 legal entities, many of them crucial to Russia's military-industrial complex, as well as 29 individuals.

Thus, the US administration is trying to hinder Russia's ability to develop weapons and technologies used in the war in Ukraine.

"Focusing on Russia's defense industry will reduce (Russian President Vladimir) Putin's capabilities and further hinder his war against Ukraine, which already suffers from low morale, disrupted supply chains and logistical failures," said US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. the statement.

The steps taken impose new sanctions on Rostech, Russia's state aerospace and defense conglomerate.

The US Department of State also said that Rostech's "hat" includes more than 800 legal entities in a wide range of sectors, and that all companies in which Rostech owns 50 percent or more fall within the scope of sanctions.

The sanctions also affect imports of gold of Russian origin, with the exception of gold that was outside Russia before today.

Gold is the largest non-energy commodity exported from the country.

Gold is a key asset for Russia's central bank, which is facing restrictions on access to some of its foreign assets due to Western sanctions.

Russia produces about 10 percent of the world's gold a year.
