Sore throat, loss of appetite and high fever are all signs of disease of the hands, feet and mouth

It is a common childhood illness - but it can also affect adults.

A couple described how they were trapped in their hotel room as "prisoners" after their children caught the disease during the holidays.

But what exactly is it?

Hand, food and mouth disease is a common infection.

Causes ulcers in the mouth and spots on the hands and feet.

Although children up to the age of 10 are more likely to be affected, it can affect both older children and adults.

The infection is not related to the epizootic disease, which affects livestock, sheep and pigs.

Symptoms usually develop between three and five days after someone.

They include:

- High fever

- Feeling sick

- Loss of appetite

- Coughing

- Stomach ache

- Sore throat and mouth

How is it treated?

There is no cure for hand, foot and mouth disease, so you need to let it go.

The best thing to do is stay home until you feel better.

- Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration - water and milk are ideal

- Eat soft foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt and soup if eating and swallowing is uncomfortable.

Avoid hot, acidic or spicy foods and drinks.

Over-the-counter pain medications, such as paracetamol and ibuprofen, can relieve sore throat and fever.

Gargling with warm, salty water can relieve mouth ulcers or you can use gel, rinse or mouth spray.

- Children should be kept away from daycare or school until they feel better.

Adults should stay away from work.

Medical attention is usually not needed unless:

- Your child is unable or unwilling to drink fluids

- Your child has signs of dehydration

- Your child develops seizures, confusion or weakness.

Symptoms are getting worse or have not improved after seven to 10 days.

There are a number of steps to prevent the disease, but it is not always possible to avoid it.

This includes:

- Use handkerchiefs to cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing

- Frequent hand washing with soap and water

- Disinfect surfaces or objects that may be contaminated

- Wash any bedding or clothing that may be contaminated
