Luhansk Governor Sergei Haidai announced early Friday morning that Ukrainian troops would leave the strategically important city of Severodonetsk.

"Holding positions that have been partially destroyed for months just to stay there does not make sense," Haidai said in a statement to Ukrainian television.

He has justified this action of the government that 90 percent of the city has been damaged or destroyed, reports

"Unfortunately, we will have to withdraw our troops from the North of Donetsk, because staying in the destroyed positions does not make sense, the death toll is rising," Haidai wrote.

Severodonetsk is a city in eastern Ukraine and one of the last bastions of Ukraine in the Luhansk region.

Fighting for the city has been going on for several months and the Ukrainian army withdrew to a part of the Nitrogen factory and resisted the aggressor.

The other site of fierce fighting is most likely the town of Lisichansk, which is separated from North Donetsk by just one river.

All the bridges connecting these two cities over the river were destroyed.
