The great fire, which has been raging in the mountain range in the northern part of the island of Cyprus for four days now, is turning into a huge ecological catastrophe.

International efforts are underway to control the fire disaster with the participation of fire brigades from 4 countries.

The fire that broke out on Tuesday at noon in the eastern part of the mountain range on the Karpas Peninsula cannot be controlled, although there was hope for that in the afternoon on Thursday, BNR explains.

Due to the strong wind and the difficult terrain to extinguish the terrain, the flames quickly spread over a large area and continued on several fronts, Cypriot-Turkish media reported.

A total of 11 firefighting planes and helicopters from Turkey, the Republic of Cyprus, Israel and the island's British air base took part in the firefight on Thursday.

As night fell, they stopped working and only ground efforts to contain the fire continued.

Due to the urgent need for water tonight, "Prime Minister" Yunal Ustel, local authorities in the area and mosques called for help with people with their own tanks and other equipment.

Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay visited the affected area on Thursday.

The Turkish Cypriot leadership described the fire as a "catastrophe" and one of the biggest fire disasters on the island.

According to current estimates, about 18 square kilometers in the mountains are completely burnt to ashes
