Radio Svaboda correspondent Rykard Yuzviak wrote about it on Twitter.

"Negotiations on granting candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova in the European Council are a little more complicated than originally thought, as some countries want to get candidate status for Bosnia as well," he wrote.

Before the summit, Austrian Chancellor Karl Negammer said that Bosnia should receive the same regime as Ukraine and Moldova in order to obtain EU candidate status before the preconditions are met.

Politico also reports that the issue of Bosnia is being actively discussed at the summit.

Moreover, officials are working to rework the findings across the country.

According to the new draft, the leaders are considering saying that "the European Council is ready to give Bosnia and Herzegovina the status of a candidate country after a number of reforms have been carried out."

And then the European Council plans to return to this issue.

  • On June 17, the European Commission published its opinion, which recommended recognizing Ukraine's European perspective and giving the country the status of a candidate for membership in the community.

  • The EU notes that formal negotiations with the candidates will begin after they meet the conditions set out in the conclusions of the European Commission on membership applications.

  • The leaders of the six Balkan countries aspiring to join the EU - Bosnia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia and Serbia - met with EU leaders for four hours on June 23 before the expected announcement of candidate status for Ukraine and Moldova.

The Balkan countries have previously complained about the stalemate their desire to join the EU has faced.

  • Among the reasons for the cessation of the EU enlargement process are fears of a repeat of the hasty accession of Romania and Bulgaria in 2007 and the poorly managed migration of Eastern European workers to the UK, which turned many Britons against the EU, leading to Brexit.

  • But officials in Brussels are also concerned that the lack of progress in the Balkans could bring the region closer to Russia.
