Russian forces are advancing on Lisichansk from the south and there is a real danger of attacking the city's environs in the coming days, according to analyzes by the Washington Institute for War Research.

At the same time, intense fighting can be expected with Ukrainian forces defending the city, such as those in Maruipol and Severodonetsk.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky outlined the frontline situation in a video address:

"Thanks to tactical maneuvers, the Ukrainian army is strengthening the defense in the Luhansk region. It is really the hardest there. The occupiers are exerting strong pressure, both in the direction of Donetsk and in the Kharkiv region."

Zelenski noted that in all his diplomatic talks, he urged the European Union to adopt a seventh package of sanctions against Russia as soon as possible.

European leaders are expected, in a symbolic gesture of support, to grant Ukraine official candidate status.
