A silent animation that tricks the brain into "hearing" a sound has caused a stir on TikTok.

The short clip shows an electric pole jumping over power lines like a rope, causing the screen to "shake" each time it sits down.

Some people report hearing the sound of pillars hitting the ground - a buzzing sound or noise.

But the sound is not really there and is actually caused by an auditory illusion, according to experts.

The bizarre 'GIF' has been around for years, but gained attention again earlier this year after it was posted on TikTok.

The user named 'Paranormal Princess' shared it with her 2.5 million followers on May 25th.

"This is so interesting," she says in the clip, which has garnered more than 60,000 views.

"It will make you hear things that are not really there."

Does anyone in visual perception know why you can hear this gif?

The illusion, created by Twitter user @IAmHappyToast, went viral for the first time in 2017 after being shared by a psychology expert at the University of Glasgow.

Dr.

Lisa DeBruine posted the animation on Twitter, asking: "Does anyone in visual perception know why you can hear this 'gif'?".

She created a poll by asking her followers whether or not they heard a sound while watching the animation.
